Area athletes competing in college

Former Strong and Camden Fairview standout Destinee Rogers has coached Arkansas State to a 10-9 overall record this women's basketball season. The Red Wolves lost to Troy 91-84 Saturday to fall to 4-5 in Sun Belt action.

Rogers is one of several former Union County athletes currently making a mark at the collegiate level, including three members from last year's El Dorado girls' basketball team.

Charalyn Rester, Lindsey Lockhart and Lauren Nelson helped the Lady Wildcats advance to the 5A State Tournament last season. The freshmen are now contributi­ng at the JUCO level.

Rester, playing for ASU-Mid South, scored 19 points with six rebounds in a 77-72 loss last week against North Arkansas Community College.

Lockhart, playing at Neosho County Community College, has averaged 5.7 points per game this season. She scored 10 in a 80-78 win over Labette as Neosho improved to 15-4 on the season.

Nelson has averaged 7.9 points and 7.9 rebounds for Mississipp­i Delta, which has posted an 11-3 record on the season.

Former Wildcat BJ Johnson, a redshirt junior at Arkansas Tech, has averaged 7.5 points per game and 2.8 rebounds for the Wonder Boys, who have a 13-4 record.

At SouthArk, Junction City's Jakourion Key is averaging 4.4 points and 3.6 rebounds for the 10-6 Stars.

Davin James, a member of El Dorado's two-time girls' state champion track team, is competing in the indoor season at the University of Central Arkansas. The freshman cleared 5-3 to place seventh in the high jump at the Washburn Rust Buster in Topeka, Kansas.

El Dorado's Breyonna Steward, competing for SAU, was 22nd in the prelims in the long jump this weekend at the Wendy's Pittsburgh State Invitation­al. Steward leaped 15-10.50.
