Lady Dragons knock off Captain Shreve 9-8

SUMMERFIEL­D, La. - Junction City avenged an early-season loss with a 9-8 win over Captain Shreve Saturday in the Summerfiel­d Tournament. The Lady Dragons, who lost to Captain Shreve 16-1 two weeks ago, improved to 6-5 on the season.

Junction City pounded out 10 hits in the game. Gracie Brown was 3-for4 with a homer and four RBI. Zamya Cunningham was 2-for-3 with three runs scored.

Captain Shreve scored four runs in the first inning and led 5-1 before Junction City pushed across three in the bottom of the second on two-out RBI singles by Cunningham and Brown.

Jess Thurmon drove in a run with a double in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-5. The Lady Dragons then took the lead with four runs in the sixth. Gracie Brown stroked a two-out, tworun homer. Valarie Kidwell would add a two-run single for a 9-6 advantage.

Captain Shreve scored two in the top of the seventh and had the tying run on third before Karla Castillo got the final batter on a pop-out to second.

Castillo pitched seven innings, allowing six hits with four walks and one strikeout.

Junction City scored a run in the top of the eighth in a 7-6 come-from-behind win over Summerfiel­d Friday night. With two outs, Castillo reached second on an error. After Thurmon singled, Castillo scored from third on a double steal with the go-ahead run.

Thurmon, who pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, retired the Lady Rebels in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory.

The Lady Dragons had seven runs on seven hits with five errors. Summerfiel­d had six runs on four hits with two errors.

Thurmon, Kidwell and De’Nyah Brown had two hits apiece for Junction City.

After the Lady Rebels scored three in the bottom of the first, the Lady Dragons had five runs in the top of the second on four hits. Kidwell, Brown and Cunningham had singles and Thurmon had a double in the inning.

Summerfiel­d took a 6-5 lead with three runs in the third.

Junction City tied the game in the sixth. Raylynn Massey walked and was sacrificed to second by Makayla Knight. Massey stole third and, with two outs, scored on a passed ball.

Tracy Holyfield homered for Summerfiel­d.
