PEGGY FAYE NASH

Peggy Faye Nash, 82, of El Dorado, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Timberlane Health and Rehab. Peggy, known to most as Sweet Momma, was born April 10, 1942, in Marion, Tennessee. She was raised in Tennessee and Michigan, later settling in Little Rock, Arkansas where she graduated from the University of Arkansas Little Rock. Peggy was raised in the Church, was a member of North Cleveland Church of God, and had a strong relationship with Christ.

She and her husband, Ben (Papa) Nash, loved life and lived it to the fullest, sharing countless adventures during their forty-four years of marriage. In 1980, after several years of travel and ownership of a restaurant in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, they moved to Old Union, Arkansas, and established Papa’s Grocery. Famous for fried catfish, Papa burgers, a top-secret recipe for pinto beans, and southern hospitality, Papa’s Grocery was often fondly referred to as the hub of the community in Union County, Arkansas.

Peggy was always quick to offer hugs and support, and all who knew her felt an immediate bond. She loved her time at Papa’s where she said she had a front row seat to love and nurture the members of the community and especially the students at Union School.

In addition to owning Papa’s Grocery, Peggy also worked at Prescolite for fifteen years where she made many lifelong friends who will always remember her for her magnetic personality and the fact that she was always “so dressed up” for work. She became known as Sweet Momma in 1988 when her granddaughter, Holly Ann Green, was born and the name became a part of who she was.

Peggy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ben Gregory “Papa” Nash, her parents, Rev. Harvey L. Rose and Lois Marie Rose, her brothers Rev. Delbert D. Rose (Saundra), and Charlie W. Rose, her beloved brother-in-law, Rev. Jim Sailors, and her stepdaughters, Sandra Nash Green, and Teresa Nash Apple.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Marie Vickery of Chattanooga, TN, her granddaughter, Holly Ann Green Riggs (Brian) of El Dorado, AR, Granddaughters Ansley Marie Phelps, and Marlowe Lindsey Phelps, of Cleveland, TN, and her great grandchildren Alexis, Braydon, and Trenton. Peggy will be greatly missed by her sisters; Colene Mercer (Rev. Fred) of Cleveland, TN, Lavenda Sailors of Buchanan, GA, Veva Rose of Cleveland, TN, Sister-in-Law Jane Starnes Rose, of Cleveland, TN, Aunt Helen Sharp of Jellico, TN, Aunt Edna ‘Snookie’ Sullivan of Atlanta, GA, and a host of nieces and nephews who she loved dearly.

The family would like to personally thank the staff at Timberlane Health and Rehabilitation for loving and caring for Sweet Momma for the past few years. They all know she went to heaven dancing and exclaiming “Wooo!,” as she was often known to do up and down the halls of the facility.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider donating to the Alexis Anne Alexander Memorial Fund at PO Box 148, El Dorado, AR 71731, or to The Lee University Lois Sharp Rose Scholarship Fund at PO Box 3450, Cleveland, TN 37320, or online at leeuniversity.edu.
