OROVILLE >> The sounds of families and friends conversing were backed by live Christmas songs played on the flute Wednesday at the Oroville Aerie FOE building as volunteers gave out free meals for the holiday.

Leading up to the annual event, which has been held for 20 years, attendees stood in line outside the building as tables were set up and food was prepared.

“We welcome anyone here from any walk of life, whether they don’t want to cook or don’t have the funds to do dinner by themselves,” said the event’s organizer, Beverly Delucchi.

Delucchi is the president of the Ladies Auxiliary in Oroville.

Along the walls were tables stacked with gifts for kids as well as clothes for attendees to go through and pick out presents.

“We have gifts ranging from toddlers to teens. We have a lot of hygiene products. We also have warm jackets, warm coats and all sorts of clothes to give away to the community,” Delucchi said.

The crowd broke into applause and cheers as Santa entered the room and made his way to his corner, where he met with children and was accompanied by the flute player.

Each year, roughly 500 people are served at the event. This year, there were 30 volunteers cooking and serving food as well as managing gifts, Delucchi said.

Raji Torotez, who’s been an Oroville resident for 20 years, attended the dinner.

“I’m impressed that there’s so many places giving away food and dinners,” Torotez said.

Amy Toet was there with her family to celebrate Christmas and spend time together.

“We came to spend Christmas together with my mom, my husband and my kids,” Toet said. “What they’re doing is amazing for everyone.”

Each year, roughly 500 people are served at the event.
