Chico High wrestling grabs road victory over Foothill

The Chico High boys wrestling team topped Foothill 40-27 in a dual Wednesday night in Palo Cedro.

Gavin Smith, competing at 115 pounds, grabbed the first pin for the Panthers as he took down Dmitri Tompkins in 2 minutes, 51 seconds.

Chico’s second win of the evening came from Xavier Gower in the 154-pound bout. Gower defeated Bryant Bartlett with a 15-4 major decision.

Senior Panther Jalen Johnson won by fall in 4:42 over Savion Wilson to claim the 172 division.

Bryce Powell (122), Liam Sehorn (128), Butch Shankles (222) and Jacob Fowler (287) all received forfeits.

Chico (11-5, 4-0 Eastern Athletic League) next competes at Red Bluff on Feb. 5. LAS PLUMAS 42, OROVILLE 30 >> The Thunderbir­ds topped the Tigers in a dual between the rival schools.

Wins for Las Plumas included Bryce Swenson (115 pounds), Riley Roulett (147), Shawn Pagenkopp (162), Brian Espindola (172), Jonathan Wood (184), Miguel Mirola (197) and Paulo Fernandes-Smith (222).

Oroville winners were not reported.

Both teams will compete in the Westside League Tournament on Feb. 8 in Paradise.

Prep Girls Soccer

PLEASANT VALLEY 4, FOOTHILL 1 >> Jillian Weber, Anna Converse, Hannah Sillers and Rylee Jellison each scored in the road win for the Vikings.

Ashlin Stevens recorded two assists and Faylinn Berkowitz added one assist.

Keeper Annika Gnesda tallied four saves.

PV (9-6-3, 5-1 EAL) plays at rival Chico High at 6 p.m. Friday.

CHICO 3, RED BLUFF 0 >> Riley Freeman scored the first goal for the Panthers on a cross from Alyssa Bloxham.

Bloxham followed by scoring the second goal unassisted, then Oliva Wilson netted the Panthers’ final goal unassisted.

Chico (16-2, 5-1 EAL) hosts rival PV at 6 p.m. Friday.

Garcia scored the lone goal for Willows. Keeper Jael Bibriesca had five saves for Willows (3-12-2).

Willows plays at Hamilton on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Prep Boys Basketball

WILLOWS 56, CORNING 49 >> The Honkers snapped a five-game losing skid with a home win over the Cardinals.

Diego Briones scored 24 points, marking the second straight game of at least 20 points for Willows (3-20, 0-4 Sacramento Valley League), John Boschi scored 17 points, and Wyatt Peters added 11 points, including seven in the third quarter.

No stats were provided by Corning (4-16, 1-4 Westside League).
