Chico State Wildcats rack up academic honors

Seven Chico State basketball players were selected to the California Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n Winter All-Academic team.

Joshua Curls and Colby Orr from the men’s team, along with Maddy Wong, Vanessa Holland, Mikaela Bismillah, Haley Ison and Mikaila Wegenke from the women’s team were each recognized for owning a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better.

Wyatt Baxter, the junior runner for the Chico State track and field and cross-country teams, also earned an academic honor. Baxter was named with his second Division II Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-America award Wednesday.

A Second Team Academic All-America selection this year, as selected by the College Sports Informatio­n Directors of America, Baxter is one of 47 Academic All-America selections in all Division II and one of only 17 repeat winners.

Beach volleyball players earn tournament victories

On June 27, the Chico Racquet Club travel team captured a pair of tournament wins.

The 12 and under duo of Emily Smith and Yuba City and partner Reilly Gilliand won the Precision Beach Volleyball Tournament at Shingle Springs.

Keely and Kalani Sterling, the 16 and under pair, won the Chico Racquet Club BVA Summer Series Tournament after topping Karina Chang and Dylan Taylor of Redding 21-18, 21-9.

Izzy Song and partner Amiah Corneao of Redding defeated Reese Shepherd and Sophie Winter, 21-8, 21-18, for third place.

Calista Scarff and Rowynn Funk defeated Katlyn Enos and Lily Kindopp 21-7, 21-11 for fifth place.

The Chico Racquet Club BVA Summer Series Tournament No. 3 takes place Saturday, July 11 at 8 a.m. Registrati­on is available at the Chico Racquet Club front desk.
