E-R’s Martin honored for story on Camp Okizu
The Chico Enterprise-Record has picked up another award in the California News Publishers Association’s California Journalism Award competition.
Sharon Martin placed second in the state in the Wildfire Feature category with her story “Memories of Camp Okizu,”
The story focused on the camp, specialized for kids with cancer, which was scorched by the North Complex
West Zone Fire. The camp had been around for 38 years, including 20 years at its Berry Creek location. “Sharon has been one of the best sportswriters and all-around journalists in our area for several years, and it absolutely does not surprise me that she has won an award for news writing,” E-R editor Mike Wolcott said. “It’s another example of the versatility and dedication every member of our staff has shown throughout these most challenging past 12 months.”
It was the sixth award to date earned by the E-R in this year’s competition, already making the newspaper one of the most-honored publications in the state. The awards will continue to be announced on a daily basis through May 18.
Also honored from the
E-R this week were reporter Will Denner, fourth place in Profile Story for his feature on Stephen Vest; former reporter and photographer Carin Dorghalli, second place for Photo Essay for her coverage of northern California wildfires; Wolcott, second place for Column Writing; Audria Ruscitti, fourth place for Column Writing; and the 2020 editorial board of Laura Urseny, Steve Schoonover and Wolcott, fifth place for editorial writing.
