El Rancho sees large turnout at first event

Local teens place high in junior competitio­n

The El Rancho Chico Golf Club enjoyed a large turnout for its first tournament of 2022, necessitat­ing three flights. The format was a fourplayer, shamble/ scramble, wherein two scores were counted in the shamble portion.

Yellow tee flight: 1, Jeff Blocker, Chris Jenson, Mark Streets and Vic Mitchell, 85.5; 2, Jim Cagno, Cecil Braswell, Joe Gallaway and Dan White, 87.7. 3, Pat Goodwin, Phil Jones, Gary Albers and Rich Lash, 88.8. 4. Scott Donahoo, Sam Davis, Cap Porterfiel­d and Doug Shook, 89.4.

The Bidwell Women’s Golf Club held its January pro-points tournament last week.

First flight low gross: Kelly MacKinnon, 86. Low net: 1, Karla Dreiss, 72; 2, Debi McDermont, 75. Second flight low gross: Barbara Albers, 103. Low net: 1, Sara Simmons, 78; 2, tie, Jolene Nixon and Eleanor Calvert, 81. Third flight low gross, tie, Susan Lanier and Susan Pease, 114. Low net: Deena Cooper, 84.

Table Mountain GC

Sally Stemen was low gross with a score of 86 in the Table Mountain Women’s weekly tournament. Leslie Vermillion took low net at 74. The game was called “Par 5 Delight” wherein players could revert their score on the par five holes back to par if needed.

Canyon Oaks CC

The Canyon Oaks Women’s Golf Club were required to decide on which nine holes to count toward their score before teeing off for their weekly game called appropriat­ely “Any Nine”.

The club played a “blind draw” scramble tournament last week as well.

The club also held its

Annual Awards Dinner last week. Shelley Carney was honored as the reigning club champion. Nancy Vieira was awarded Player-of-the-Year. The Most Improved Player was Linda Arellano. Arellano lowered her handicap from 22.5 to 16.3, not easy to do at Canyon Oaks. The Most Inspiratio­nal award was presented to Linda Alworth who also serves as the club’s handicap chair. Captain Sally Pearson, turned over her Captain’s gavel to Cynthia Paulo, who will serve in that capacity for two years. Pearson becomes the co-captain for 2022.

Butte Creek CC

The Butte Creek Women’s Golf Club played a game called “ONES” counting only the scores beginning with those letters.

First flight: 1, Sandy Fortino, 32; 2, Irma Jenkins, 33; 3, tie, Karla Dreiss, Sally Hayes and Kay Kurdziel, 34. Second flight: 1, Darlene Thomasson, 33; 2, tie, Paula Rich and Joan Bequette, 35.

Junior Golf

The Junior Golf Associatio­n of Northern California tournament­s began in earnest in January, starting with the 36-hole Haggin Oaks Shoot-Out. Tommy

Ma took first in the boy’s 12-13 age division. Hyunhu Na took the second spot. Amy Na finished second in the girls 14-15 age division. Andrew Ma took seventh in the boys 14-15 age division, shooting a fine round of one-over par 73 the second day.

Spectacula­r shots

Pat Hallin holed out his 138-yard approach shot on the 11th hole at Butte Creek for an eagle two. Witnessing Hallin’s perfect 7-iron shot find the bottom of the cup, and undoubtedl­y paying handsomely for the privilege, was his playing companion Jim Sands. Amazing what some people will do to get their name in the golf column, just saying.

National contest
