Deborah Ruth Bowden Rakes, 72, of Pamplin, died January 8, 2022, she was followed in death by her husband, Larry Robert Rakes, 77, on Monday, January 17, 2022.

Deborah was born on December 20, 1949, the daughter of the late Theresia Victoria Bowden and Beuford Sonnet Bowden. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, Jeanette Victoria Bowden. Deborah attended the Amherst Church of God.

Larry was born on October 26, 1944, a son of Bonnie Mae Osborn Rakes and the late Heber Festus Rakes. He was a proud US Army veteran serving his country in the Vietnam War. Larry was a member of Amherst Church of God, the Appomattox Chapter of the Gideons Internatio­nal. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the US, and the Virginia Loggers Associatio­n.

Deborah and Larry are survived by three children, Robert Todd Rakes (Valerie), Diane LaDee Arvizo (David), and Rachael Victoria Hager (Keith); nine grandchild­ren, Robert Mack Wilkins, Jr., Virginia Victoria Mayes (Russell Aaron), Wesley Obadiah Wilkins, Zachary Todd Rakes (Talley), Lauren Rakes Edward (Dillon), Joseph Kendall Miller, Kristyn Taylor Jarnecke (Nicholas), Kiana LaDee Arvizo, and Olivia Karen Arvizo; six great-grandchild­ren, Russell Josiah Mayes, Zoey Elaine Rakes, Payton Brooke Rakes, Zander Nelson Rakes, Grayson Dalton Edwards, and Peyton Scott Jarnecke.

Deborah is also survived by a brother, Melvin Sonnet Bowden (Judith) and a sister, Constance Theresia Tate.

Larry is also survived by his mother, Bonnie Mae Osborn Rakes; a brother, Frank Heber Rakes (Denise); and two sisters, Bonnie Rakes Peracca (Sam), and Karen Lynn Booth (James).

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, January 23, 2022, at Robinson Funeral Home by Pastor Harold Bare. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at a later date in Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia.
