Keeping the heat on homeless process
Going forward, it will be important for citizens of good will to notice how the City of Chico implements any new homeless policy. As such, we should note “red flags.” Here are a few from the press conference of 1/18:
1) Mayor Coolidge attacked the integrity of LSNC attorneys, representing eight homeless clients. Why the baseless accusations of profiteering if there is any intention of seeking common ground?
2) Mayor Coolidge overstated the number of new beds, far exceeding the one occupant limit, clearly mandated in the Settlement. Is he in denial as to the terms of the agreement?
3) Mayor Coolidge opined that the homeless would not use the new Pallet shelter facility. Why the pessimistic projection, unless there’s reason to believe the facility will be less than desirable. Why would it be less than desirable if it’s managed by people of good will, trying to make it desirable?
4) When Mayor Coolidge mentioned the participation of Butte County Behavioral Health, his tone was all cudgel and no carrot. Why?
5) Mayor Coolidge expounded on his frustration with Pallet shelter units being equipped with AC — with this somehow even provoking a complaint that he cannot always maximize AC use in his own home! Would any person with good intentions insist that a 64 square foot plastic box be inhabited — in a climate where temperatures often exceed 105 degrees — without some kind of cooling system?
Given current leadership, this entire process is best met with intense public scrutiny.
