PARADISE » A traffic stop Wednesday evening led to the arrest of two people in Paradise suspected of multiple felonies.

According to a Paradise Police Department press release, at about 9:53 p.m. Wednesday night, an officer attempted to pull over a car that reportedly had expired tags.

Police say that when the officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, the driver accelerated down a side street in Paradise off of Pentz Road that had a dead end.

When the officer arrived where the vehicle was stopped, Jacob Arthur Ascheman, 26, and Richelle Marie Roullett, 42, were out of the car, according to the release.

According to police, both of them were acting suspiciously when the officer approached, and a records check on Ascheman was inconclusive, but officers were able to determine that Roullett was on felony probation for previous vehicle theft.

That led to a search of the vehicle, which police allege led to the discovery of handgun ammunition, modified “shaved” keys police are associated with auto theft, a large number of keys that appeared to be for community “cluster” mailboxes, and evidence of narcotics use.

Police also said that the search of the car resulted in paperwork for Ascheman, who police said claimed to be somebody else. Police said that since Ascheman had outstanding warrants, they used booking photos and DMV records to identify him.

Police allege he claimed to be an acquaintance of his to avoid identification. Police said because the pair jumped out of the car and tried to escape the officer, they searched the area and located a loaded handgun and narcotics paraphernalia in a nearby field. Police allege the ammunition in the gun was the same as what was found in the car and that the handgun’s serial number was scratched off.

The pair were arrested on suspicion of four felonies; being a felon or addict in possession of a firearm, being a prohibited person processing ammunition, possession of a controlled substance while armed, possession of a firearm with a removed serial number and possession of burglary tools and auto theft keys.

Ascheman was also arrested on suspicion of providing police officers with false identification. Both Ascheman and Roullett were booked into Butte County Jail.
