Donations needed for Oroville fireworks show

- By Kyra Gottesman Mercury-Register

OROVILLE » Donations to sponsor the ninth annual Rotary of Oroville July 4 fireworks show are trickling in but not at the rate they have in previous years, jeopardizing the event.

As of Tuesday, $4,250 had been raised. This, plus the $3,464 in funds leftover from the 2021 event, bring the total funds available so far this year to $7,714 — slightly more than half of the amount needed.

“It takes $15,000 minimum to make a contract with the pyrotechnic company. We need to have all the funds donated or at least committed by June 20,” said Dave Pittman, Rotary fireworks chair.

If enough funds have not been received by June 20, the event will be canceled and all funds will be returned to donors.

“The key to this event has always been the donations and support from the people of Oroville. That’s what’s always had it be successful. The donations are coming in much slower than in the past. In the past few years, we’ve raised $20,000 to $22,000,” said Pittman.

Currently the display is slated for approximately 9 p.m. July 4 and will, once again, be launched from the Oroville Airport. While the airport won’t be open to the public during the event, the display will be visible from the foothills, Forebay and Afterbay, as well as higher elevations within and around the city.

“It’s a celebration that thousands of people throughout Oroville enjoy because we chose the airport so the display is visible from all neighborhoods throughout Oroville,” said Pittman.

Pittman is hoping that more local businesses and private citizens will donate again this year.

“It is very exciting to see our community come together, and we are grateful to everyone who has assisted in this effort so far this year. We hope more people will contribute,” said Pittman.
