‘Puffs’ a play not about the famous boy wizard

-

CHICO >> Chico State’s School of the Arts’ upcoming performance takes you to a different kind of school. At the Certain School of Magic and Magic you’ll find yourself in a familiar wizarding world. But be warned “Puffs” is not about everybody’s favorite boy wizard.

Instead, this enchanting and comical original production is for anyone who has ever felt like they weren’t the hero of their own story. “Puffs,” written by Matt Cox for and about the underdog, follows three friends through their adolescent years in magic school. Those with and without a love for a certain boy wizard will enjoy this unapologetic and inventive play that tells a familiar story in a fresh and new way.

“Follow three unlikely Puffs just trying to make it at a magic school that proves to be very dangerous for children,” said Director Erin Horst. “Our actors are an ensemble, performing as if they are an improv troupe retelling a popular story with some familiar and not-so-familiar characters.”

Expect to enjoy exciting scenes that summon warm feelings about friendship and loyalty. Once the curtains close, you’ll have captured enough happy memories to conjure your own Patronus!

“This production will certainly leave you feeling good and thankful for all the loving friends in your life,” Horst said.

There will be over one hundred props used in the show, and due to the set being built “in the round,” meaning the audience will be seated on all sides, every movement and emotion evoked by the cast can be taken in by the entire audience. One smart person will also be chosen at random to participate in the performance!

Obviously, curses will be lobbed at this magic school—so be warned, the performance does contain

some instances of strong adult language.

“Puffs” will take place March 1—4 at 7:30 p.m. and March 4—5 at 2 p.m. at the Wismer Theatre inside the Performing Arts Center on the Chico State campus.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, and $8 for youth and Chico State students and are available online at www.chicostatetickets.com, in person at the University Box Office on the corner of West Third and Chestnut streets, or by phone at 530-898-6333.
