The truth about Chico, affordable housing

- — Chuck Tatreau, Chico

I have read letters to the editor that are entirely incorrect and would like to set the record straight with facts vs misinformation. I have built market rate, affordable, and subsidized housing in the Chico and Butte County area for over 10 years.

1.) On average over the last six years, Chico builders have built approximately 593 residential housing units a year. This is a combination of single family and muti-family.

2.) New units which are subsidized with taxpayer dollars, coming online between now and the end of this year are 1,392 units. The majority of these are multi-family. 1,392 units! Of those 1,392 units of subsidized housing, 250 units are currently being built in an area of Chico, where Mr. Guillon and Mr. Brouhard reside.

Gullion and Brouhard have been long supporters and willing participants of affordable housing. Neither orchestrated any sort of campaign to stop these units from being built in their neighborhood — in fact Guillon funded some of the preconstruction/planning costs to get the project started.

The community needs to know the facts, which is housing is being built by me and other builders meeting the needs of all citizens who work hard to obtain the American dream.

I am proud of our Chico builders; we are not the enemy. It is my sincere hope we can work together to achieve housing for all demographics that live in Chico. I am more than willing to sit down with anyone that would like to discuss how we can move forward together, rather than attacking each other.
