LADY WENTWORTH’S HORSES
The all-time most influential Arabian horse worldwide is the Polish-bred Skowronek, whose name means “skylark.” Foaled in 1909 and imported to England as a 4 or 5 year old, he was a more correct horse than Azrek, with a short, strong back and excellent
substance. Like Azrek, Skowronek possessed a short, broad head with a definite jibbah and noticeable dish.
Skowronek’s son, *Raffles (foaled 1926), is the ancestor of many American Arabians
with so-called “extreme” heads. *Raffles had very high action at the trot, a feature valued by his U.S. importer Roger Selby, who was also a prominent breeder of American Saddlebreds.
