More advice on wood chewing

-

I have another comment to add to the advice offered for the fillies who gnawed on their wood fence boards (“A Gnawing Problem,” Consultants, EQUUS 439). If feeding more hay isn’t an option, I would try putting their ration in one of the many slow feeders that are available on the market.

Horses have a serious need to not just eat for hours and hours but to graze their food. Pressing their teeth and lips against the slow feeder’s surface duplicates grazing and may help the fillies feel more content. The manufacturers of these devices aren’t kidding when they say that horses will prefer to feed out of them instead of free-choice food. My gang of six completely stopped chewing on the trees now that I use the slow feeder hay nets. Leigh Kuhn Kalkaska, Michigan
