Paper versus plastic

-

“Ready to Serve” (Hands On Tip, EQUUS 446) could cause some serious health problems for horses. By packing meals for horses in plastic bags and sealing them closed, you run the risk of the feed in the bag spoiling. Moisture in the feed plus heat during the day could cause mold, mildew and other fungal growth to develop in a very short time. If you do not notice the dangerous growth on the feed and give it to your horse, you could easily cause a case of colic or other serious illness.

Years ago, I learned from the United States Pony Clubs to always pack my horse’s meals in paper bags, which eliminates this possible risk. Also by using paper bags, when I have multiple horses traveling with me, it is easy to write the name of the animal, plus the day and time to feed that meal for each of my critters.
