What makes a Thoroughbred
Dr. Deb Bennett’s in-depth articles are always a treat, and I look forward to them. The latest series on Thoroughbreds is one of her best. But she hit the nail on the head when she wrote (concerning the loss of bloodline biodiversity in the breed), “In social, philosophical and economic terms it represents a shortsighted willingness to damage the overall health of the breed in trade for immediate profit” (“Foundation Sires and Dams,” Conformation Insights, EQUUS 449). I was blessed to witness three Triple Crown winners, but I doubt that I will see another in my lifetime for that very reason. Diane Weatherwax Jackson, Michigan
