ETERNAL
Eternal, 1916, by Sweep out of Hazel Burke. I include this stallion as a good example of the convergence of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse type. Considered one of the best 2-yearolds of 1918, Eternal was possessed of blazing speed.
The Thoroughbred Record for August 31 of that year reported, “Probably in no running of the Hospital Stakes [at Saratoga Park] has a two year old shown such a marvelous burst of speed as Eternal did in rounding the upper turn.” Retired to stud, Eternal sired at least 19 sons and over 30 daughters, many of which were successful at classic distances—but, importantly, almost all, like their sire, saw their greatest success at sprint distances. Like other sires of the Broomstick line, Eternal has thus been sought after as a sire of Quarter Horses.
