Mumtaz Mahal
1921 (by The Tetrarch, a Herodline stallion, out of Lady Josephine by Sundridge, a Vedette-line stallion, but with multiple crosses to Lexington). This mare is definitely not of the Birdcatcher family but is presented as an example of the balanced, flat-muscled, “framey” phenotype highly beneficial to them in terms of soundness. Compare her conformation to that of Gallorette. Though possessed of an archetypal “stayer” pedigree, this mare was offered only 10 starts, most at “sprint” distances. She was indeed very fast and is an ancestress of both Bold Ruler and Secretariat, who will be discussed in our next installment.
