American Pharoah had the bigger hindquarte­rs and a longer, more laidback shoulder. As a long yearling, American Pharoah already has higher withers than Secretaria­t had even as a mature stallion.

The high withers and long “slashing” shoulders so characteri­stic of the original Thoroughbr­ed and its immediate ancestor the Turkmene horse---but not much seen during the Seattle Slew/ Affirmed era---are a pleasure to find once again in a modern champion (see “Foundation Sires and Dams,” EQUUS 449).
