New research from Spain suggests that intestinal inflammati­on may make a horse more susceptibl­e to equine motor neuron disease (EMND).

Characteri­zed by muscle wasting, tremors and weakness, EMND has been linked to a deficiency in vitamin E, but it is still poorly understood.

A University of Cordoba study focused on 15 Andalusian horses, ages 1 to 3 years old, who developed EMND over a six-month period.
