Wild birds, especially waterfowl, are the primary natural reservoir for influenza type A viruses and are believed to be the original source of the disease. Over time, mutations in the virus have created subtypes that affect many species, including dogs, cats, domestic poultry, seals, people and pigs as well as horses.
