Another issue people need to consider is the behavioral problems that can be caused by confining horses and ponies with limited access to food. My own pony receives frequent feedings of hay in slow-feed hay nets. Even though he still has plenty of body fat, he is constantly hungry and more difficult to handle as a result. Ever lead a hungry pony over grass? A constantly hungry pony is not the best-behaved and most cooperative creature when required to ignore food and obey his child handler. I find my pony is so much easier to handle when he can be out at pasture with the other horses during the winter months and summer droughts.
