As a longtime subscriber (since EQUUS 1), I’ve enjoyed your advice for decades. I hope you continue to provide great articles like Jonathan Field’s Conversations. After a lifetime of horses, I recently adopted two rescues who were both severely abused. Jonathan’s excellent articles are spot on with what I see happening in my two geldings and it is gratifying to know I’m on the right path.
I also appreciated “Neglected or Just Thin?” (EQUUS 467). I once had a very ill horse that the neighbors threatened to report because he was incredibly thin. It was a very sad, difficult time as I had had him for decades. I only wish I’d had this article to copy and give to my “well meaning” neighbors, so that I could’ve had peace at that time. As mentioned in the article, some illnesses take time to diagnose, attempt treatment and, ultimately, decide on an ending. If folks are truly concerned about the welfare of a horse, politely ask first, before making assumptions and running with them.
