TRAINING IDEALS: AMERICAN FOLLOWERS OF FRANCOIS BAUCHER

-

Bugler Capt. Frederick Benteen is shown here in about 1862, before his promotion to Colonel under Alfred Pleasonton at the Battle of Marais des Cygnes. The trumpet makes a loud noise, and the captain’s horse turns his ears backward to listen to it but isn’t at all disturbed, as the cocked hind foot shows. The horse’s forehand is perfectly raised on the mere weight of the reins. Benteen’s seat is exemplary. The horse’s conformation classifies him as a grade Thoroughbred.
