NOTE: Many horse owners use their horses for athletic purposes, and with that increased stress comes additional health problems. Performance horses suffer from injuries and illnesses that might be unnoticed or wouldn’t affect the horse if it had a less-strenuous lifestyle. For example, information presented at the recent AAEP Resort Symposium noted that proper diagnostic procedures are required to determine if a horse is lame, has a neurologic problem, or both! And that some sport horses have undiagnosed neurologic deficits that initially don’t affect their performance at the level at which they are competing, but might cause a problem at higher levels or as they get older.
