EQUUS

Room to roam

I really enjoyed “Rethinking the Box Stall” (EQUUS 478). In my experience growing up in the Midwest, I often saw horses in stalls with limited, if any, turnout and contact with the other horses. In contrast, when I moved out West, I saw herds of horses turned out on many acres, often with no enclosures in sight. I thought I wanted a barn for my own horses but have found that access to a three-sided run-in shed and turnout with a buddy has been beneficial to both. I now can’t even imagine putting my horses in stalls because they seem happy and well-adjusted with their current environment. Carol Delisi Sheridan, Montana
