EQUUS

THE 100-LENGTH VICTORY

-

Only one horse, Hoodwink, was entered against Man o’ War in the Lawrence Realization Stakes, run at Belmont Park on September 4, 1920. Racing mainly against the clock, Man o’ War won by approximately 100 lengths and set a world record for the 1 5/8-mile distance of 2:40 4/5. The record stood until broken by Man o’ War’s great-grandson, Swaps, in 1956. Swaps’ record at this distance, 2:38 1/5, stands to this day.
