EQUUS

MOUNTAIN MEN

-

A U.S. Forest Ranger in Montana, 1910. This horse is a Cayuse showing mostly Spanish influence. The bit is a double-ring snaffle, and the saddle has minimum skirts and fenders to make it lighter. The saddle pad is thick and stuffed or lined with wool. Note despite the steep terrain there is neither crupper nor breastplate, but there are two functional mohair cinches.

Mountain man, trapper and journalist Andrew Garcia in Montana, 1872. The handsome and friendly horse is a Cayuse showing Morgan and Canadian influence.
