Do you live in an “open range” state? Un­der open range laws, live­stock can roam freely, re­gard­less of who owns the land, and live­stock wan­der­ing loose are not con­sid­ered estray. Open range laws also re­quire prop­erty own­ers to put up fences if they wish to keep an­i­mals owned by oth­ers off their land. Many states in the West have such laws; some states al­low coun­ties to set their own rules.
