CONFORMATION ANALYSIS

Conformation analysis of 2 year olds or “long yearlings,” from photographs taken at the beginning of their race training. All these horses descend in both sire and damsire line from Phalaris, and in either sire or damsire line from Mr. Prospector. Some images are reversed so that all the horses face left. See average body proportions presented in the table on the next page.

The averages in the table above are calculated for eight long yearlings or 2-yearolds of Phalaris–Mr. Prospector breeding. They are compared to the Matchembred Man o’ War. The number of horses analyzed in this and succeeding tables is not large enough to constitute a statistically valid sample. However, differences in minimum and maximum measurement of over 10 percent are indicative of phenotypic variability; these are things that Thoroughbred buyers should be alert to. Especially important is the total length of forelimb. Breeders should also take note of where Man o’ War differs most from the Phalaris-breds: greater arm length and less croup height at this stage of immaturity, indicating a less downhill body balance.
