This pie chart is based on genetic investigation by E.P. Cunningham (1991) and Cristina Luis and colleagues (2007). Just a handful of 17th and early 18th century founder individuals continue to have disproportionate influence over the genetics of the modern Thoroughbred. Percentages represent the fraction of a given horse’s genes that can be identified in the present Thoroughbred population.
