TREATMENT AND RECOVERY:
Caused by a parasitic organism called Sarcocystis neurona (inset), equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) can lead to incoordination, lethargy, gait changes or other problems. Most cases respond to treatment with antiprotozoal or antiparasitic medications. However, the return of EPM signs months or even years after treatment may signal relapse. After a diagnosis confirms a recurrence of the disease, a second course of treatment may be needed.
