FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN CHOOSING A FEED SUPPLEMENT
It’s especially important to be an informed consumer when you’re purchasing a supplement for your horse.
Because they are not classified as drugs, feed supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). That means you need to determine for yourself which products are from the most reputable sources. Here are four questions to ask when considering a product:
1. Is the label informative? Although it’s not required, a reliable supplement company will list ingredients, including amounts, clearly on its labels. A complete label will also outline recommended doses.
2. Does the manufacturer provide a phone number? A company that is happy to answer questions about its product will list a phone number on the label. Call before you purchase the supplement to get an idea of how much the company stands by its product.
3. Is there a lot number? Companies use lot numbers to track batches of a product and what went into them. A lot number is a sign of conscientious quality control.
4. Does it have a National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) Seal of Quality? The NASC is a nonprofit organization of supplement manufacturers and suppliers who self-regulate to maintain the quality of their products. Before being allowed to display the NASC logo, the manufacturer must meet strict criteria, which include an independent quality audit and a written quality-control policy.
You can find a list of companies that meet the NASC guidelines at www.nasc.cc.
