EQUUS

POP QUIZ ANSWER

Yes, but not much of one. Acorns, which contain tannins, pose a slight risk and are energy dense, which can be a problem for horses prone to laminitis. Ingesting large quantities—a pound or two—can lead to diarrhea or worse ailments, such as colic or kidney failure. Yet some horses seem to have no trouble even after gorging on acorns. It’s best to be watchful and discourage “acorn eaters.” If you notice a horse has developed a taste for them, move him to a different paddock or pasture for a few weeks until most are gone.
