with prebiotics, which are typically complex carbohydra­tes that microorgan­isms in the gastrointe­stinal tract use as metabolic fuel. Prebiotics provide energy to the good bacteria in the gastrointe­stinal tract. A simple way of thinking of it is that prebiotics are the “food” for the probiotics. Some supplement­s contain both probiotics and prebiotics, but are advertised as probiotic supplement­s.
