Escalon’s varsity softball girls continue to put wins on the books.

Action this past week in the Trans-Valley League saw the squad craft victories at home and on the road.

Hosting Mountain House on Tuesday, April 24, the girls took a 3-1 win off the field. Chardae Hoskins got the win on the mound, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out 15 Lady Mustangs.

“We scored two in the first,” head coach Art Brooks said. “We got one in the third; their run came in the fourth inning.”

In the first, Escalon cashed in with a triple from Hoskins, who scored on a passed ball, and an RBI double from Molly Brown. She drove in Morgan Reider, who got on after being hit by a pitch and then stole second.

Third inning scoring came on a walk to Hailie Webster, a steal of second and a run-scoring hit from Brown.

Mountain House got their lone run on a hit, two stolen bases and a fielder’s choice.

“We didn’t have much offense but we did get the win,” noted Brooks.

At Hughson on Thursday, April 26, the bats came alive for the Lady Cougars, winning the game by an 11-6 final.

Escalon took the early lead with a run in the top of the first, Hughson rallied back to take a 3-1 lead with three runs in the third.

“In the top of the fourth, we scored six runs,” Brooks said. “Then they came back with three more in the fourth.”

That still kept Escalon in the lead, 7-6, and they put some distance between themselves and the host Lady Huskies with three runs in the top of the fifth to make it 10-6. Escalon’s final run came in the sixth inning.

Three hits apiece on the day came from Hoskins and Lexy Underwood, who had a pair of doubles. Hannah Boyd went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI; Reider went 2-for-4 with three RBI; Bella Strach went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs batted in; Malia Babasa was 2-for-3 with an RBI; while Brown, Webster and Sage Davis all had hits in the victory.

Hoskins again got the win, allowing six runs on nine hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts.

“It was a little closer than what the score tells you,” Brooks noted. “They had threats every inning; this was a good win.”

With the wins, the girls improved to 9-0 in league action.

Escalon was scheduled to play at Ripon on Monday, April 29 and host Hilmar on Tuesday, April 30 – after The Times went to press – before closing out the regular season on Thursday at Modesto Christian.
