OSCAR THE BUMP ROLLER

We Tackle Powder and Front Assembly

- Words and Photos by SOLOMON LUNGER

So, what have we been up to with Oscar the Bump? In the last issue, you saw us complete the QA1 rear suspension for mockup. Once we finished that phase, we took all the suspension off and loaded the frame up for powder.

IF YOU ARE A SUBSCRIBER OR AN AVID reader of F-100 Builder’s Guide magazine, then you’ve seen our ’72 Ford F-100 project affectionally known as Oscar the Bump. We’ve been working on it for the last year or so. In this latest update, we finally wrap up our foundation of the build: a killer rolling chassis featuring some of the very best components.

We then took the frame over to our buddy Jose at EIP Powder Coating to get it coated. The color

we went with is Empire Copper Vein, which is a polyester vein powdercoat with an eggshell finish by Prismatic Powders. The color for the frame will match the interior color we’ve chosen for this build. We like to have some accent and contrast colors, and we think it will go perfectly with the rest. It was then time to load up the frame and head back down to Evolutionary Rides for final assembly.

The guys at Evolutionary Rides wasted no time at all and started on the final install of the QA1 front suspension. When they removed it, instead of fully tearing it down, they left it as assembled as possible so it would make for an easier reinstall. They got all of the suspension back in place and then torqued to the correct specs.

Once we had the front suspension installed, it was time to finalize the brakes. On this project, we decided to go with Baer Brakes and use its Pro+ 14-inch 6-piston setup. We plan to do a little bit of track time with the truck, so this setup will handle anything we can throw at it. The QA1 suspension kit came with 2-inch dropped spindles that are from a 79-81 F-body. Baer wanted to help us Ford guys and give us a Ford bolt pattern, so they created hubs that fit the F-body spindle. You can have 5x4.5 or 5x5.5 bolt (little or big) patterns, which is really nice for opening up our wheel option selections.

Next up for Oscar was to reinstall the rear QA1 setup. We still need to paint the John’s Industries 9-inch, but we have some tricks up our sleeve for that, so stay tuned. As always, stay up to date on our projects by going on Instagram and checking out @ f100buildersguidemag and @ streettrucks. Last but not least, make sure that you enjoy your classic trucks and get out and drive them!
