1 Your age mat­ters.

Lasik is pro­hib­ited for kids un­der age 18, but for pa­tients in their 20s, the surgery can re­sult in per­fect vi­sion. It’s worth not­ing, though, that those pa­tients will likely need read­ing glasses later on, while peo­ple who have the pro­ce­dure at 50 or older prob­a­bly won’t.

2 It’s not cov­ered by most health in­surance plans.

But you can use money from your Flex­i­ble Spend­ing Ac­count to pay for its cost of $1,000 or more per eye.

3 Be wary if you have med­i­cal is­sues.

Lasik isn’t rec­om­mended if you suf­fer from an au­toim­mune dis­ease, have cer­tain eye con­di­tions (like dry eyes) or take med­i­ca­tions that slow heal­ing.
