Next time you’re dreaming about jetting off on a family adventure, think closer to home! North America has so many incredible destinations that will live up to your globe-trotting fantasies. These five spots are worth the trip.

We all want to show our kids the world. Tapas in Madrid. An African safari. The Australian Outback. We dream not only of those trips, but of seeing the joy and excitement in our kids’ eyes as they experience a far-off land for the first time. And for those of us who are very lucky, we’ll be able to save up and go on one of these once-in-a-lifetime adventures with our families. But for the years when you need to stay closer to home, we have good news: North America can make you feel like you’re in Europe, Africa, South America, or even Australia. “Why fret?” says Colleen Kelly, host and executive producer of the national PBS series Family Travel with Colleen Kelly. “There are so many awesome and historic places right around here. Incredible scenery, fascinating landmarks, cultural diversity, and fantastic foods...we really do have it all here in North America.” Got a trip on your bucket list? Find a swap—each a favorite of a family-travel guru—that’s just as amazing.
