Farm & Ranch Living

A Note About Progress

- BY HERBERT BROWN JR.

Granddad’s way was di erent from my dad’s way. My dad’s way is di erent from my way. I consider this a healthy progression. For us to be in agriculture for another 100 years, innovation will be key. We are in a creative economy, and we have to adapt to new ideas and ways of doing things. My dad o en jokes around and calls me the “telephone farmer.”

Although we laugh about it, innovative business practices, social media and marketing play critical roles in farm businesses today. We have many more tools and ways to use technology than before. For example, we’re in the process of building a digital store through the Barn2Door online platform. Since this platform was built for farmers, the site will allow us to be innovative in our marketing and to make the customer experience more convenient.
