How can I control “down there” sweat?
Q: I’m 47. My doctor said exercise would reduce my hot flashes—but when I work out, sweat soaks through my clothes until it looks like I’ve had an accident! Panty liners aren’t helping. What else can I try?
A: Regular exercise can cut hot flash frequency and severity in half—that’s one reason I “prescribe” it to my perimenopausal patients. But hormonal flux during perimenopause can also cause the body’s sweat glands to work overtime, producing the embarrassing dampness you’re experiencing.
To help control the problem, I suggest working out in relaxed-fit capris or yoga pants since tight leggings can trap heat and sweat. And consider investing in moisture-control panties (like the Athletic Leak-Proof Bikini, $25, KnixWear.com, which have a liner that absorbs excess moisture). You can also apply a dusting of cornstarch (to absorb wetness) or a layer of antiperspirant to your inner thighs, where sweat glands are found. But if these strategies don’t help, I suggest seeing your doctor for more options.
