Relax and renew in Key Largo
Sun-soaked beaches, swaying palms and spectacular views are what you’ll find on this island paradise
Nestled in the northernmost part of the 1,700-island archipelago of the Florida Keys is picturesque Key Largo. Boasting crystal-clear waters, an abundance of marine life and stunning coral reefs, it’s easy to see why this oasis, located an hour south of Miami, is known as “the diving capital of the world.” And for those seeking a laid-back retreat, Key Largo also offers a plethora of dining options, soft-sand beaches and perfect weather for a relaxing getaway.
Start your day by basking in the sun at Harry Harris Park, a family-friendly spot offering short walking trails, a playground, grills, a serene beach and a small lagoon. “There were ample picnic tables and almost all were shaded,” says a reviewer from Vermont. “We were lucky to have the beach area all to ourselves and we had a good time walking around and collecting small shells we found laying in the sand.”
To marvel at the beauty below the water’s surface, go on a snorkel tour of the breathtaking Molasses Reef. Raves JE and JA D on TripAdvisor.com, “The schools of colorful fish would part around us as we slowly swam by them—it was like watching a Nat Geo documentary, only better in person!”
After toweling off, drive to Dolphins Plus Oceanside or Bayside marine park ($59 and up) to enjoy unique interaction with the friendly animals. “Expect foot pushes, dorsal tows, handshakes and kisses while in a saltwater lagoon with four dolphins,” says alicensetochill on TripAdvisor.com. “There was also a month-old baby in the lagoon, playfully swimming around us—too cute!”
End your day with a sunset cruise with Key Largo Princess ($40 per adult, $22 per child). Says a reviewer from Maine, “The colors of the sunset over the water were absolutely stunning!”
