First For Women

What’s causing this period change?

-

For the past few months, my menstrual cycles have gone down to 22 days. Prior to this, my periods have always been regular (I’m 45). I’m not on birth control. What’s up?

Most women have a cycle that’s anywhere from 21 to 35 days, so you’re still in the normal range. That said, shorter cycles can be an indication that the number of eggs in your ovaries is dwindling. In other words, your body may be gearing up for menopause.

But there are other causes too: Weight loss, excessive exercise and stress can impact how often you get your period. And conditions like thyroid dysfunction and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also influence your cycle.

Though shorter cycles are generally nothing to worry about, since it’s a change for you, I suggest seeing your doctor. She can help you determine if your more frequent bleeding is caused by other factors. If no cause is found or if your doctor doesn’t think these changes are due to impending menopause, she may suggest going on the Pill to regulate your periods.
