Dream escape: Turks and Caicos
Baby-soft sand, dazzling blue waters and stunning views are what await you in this little slice of heaven
Tucked away in the Atlantic Ocean, just south of the Bahamas, is the beautiful archipelago of 40 islands known as Turks and Caicos (TCI). Its two most frequented islands, Grand Turk and Providenciales (Provo), entice visitors with vibrant coral reefs, unforgettable sunset cruises and more than 30 miles of white-sand coastline. And for those looking for unique boutiques, freshly caught seafood and rich historical landmarks, TCI has it all.
Start your getaway at Mudjin Harbor on Middle Caicos (reachable by ferry, then car from Provo) to enjoy gorgeous scenery, a beachside grill serving up local favorites and minimal crowds. “A safe, clean environment with breathtaking views, and you may even see whales passing by,” says Elizabeth A on TripAdvisor.com. “The caves there are also a must, and there is one that leads out to a private beach.”
To experience the islands’ stunning marine life, pay a visit to Smith’s Reef on Provo to snorkel in the refreshing turquoise waters. Says BamaNC on TripAdvisor.com, “We saw two nurse sharks, a stingray, several turtles, a lobster and lionfish!”
After you towel off, head to Cheshire Hall Plantation ($10 per person) to tour the ruins and learn about the islands’ history. “The National Trust has created a series of well-maintained trails around this fascinating place,” says Doug F on TripAdvisor.com. “The guides present a great tour of what life was like in the Colonial era.”
End your day with a sunset cruise by Sun Charters ($50 per adult) to see the famous glowworms. Says Nan2010 on TripAdvisor.com, “The worms do their mating on the third night after the full moon and glow a fluorescent green color in the water—fascinating!”
Great day trip:
Grand Turk
Take a “hopper” flight from Provo ($95 per person round-trip) to the island of Grand Turk. Once there, discover local history at the Turks and Caicos National Museum, unwind at the popular SunRay Beach, get up close and personal with the stingrays in Gibbs Bay, and explore the islands’ role in the historic sea salt industry at The Salt House.
Don’t miss:
Island Fish Fry
Experience a taste of local culture at the Island Fish Fry, held Thursday nights from 5:30 to 9:30 pm at the Bight Children’s Park on Provo. Listen to the music of local performers, shop from vendors and, of course, indulge in delicious seafood dishes.
