A colorblocked shell

-

How it flatters: A sideswept bob with structured angles draws focus up to visually elongate the neck and lift the eyes so features appear more youthful. What’s more, a blunt cut that turns under slightly in back helps thin hair appear full, says Jenna Mast, a colorist at Préma Salon in New York City. She added even more depth to the style by darkening hair at the roots and at the nape of the neck using a hue similar to the natural root color. “The colorblocking creates a shadow effect all around, so finer strands have dimension from every angle.” Plus, it makes roots look more intentional, allowing for more time between touch-ups.

Get the look: Ask for an angled, graduated bob with blended layers. To get the color, apply darkblond dye (like Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Coverage in #700-Candied Cashew, Amazon.com) to roots, blending down 1 inch, then apply across the underside of hair at the nape of the neck. Let sit 25 minutes; rinse. Next, use a highlighting kit (we like Revlon Color Effects Frost & Glow in Honey, Target. com) to paint streaks onto 1" sections of hair, starting 1 inch from roots. Let sit 30 minutes; rinse.
