Dream escape: Nassau

Dazzling blue waters, snow-white sand and calming breezes are what you’ll discover in this tropical paradise

-

Located on the island of New Providence is the breathtaking city of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Home to nearly 10 worldrenowned beaches, duty-free shopping, vibrant Victorian architecture and a culture blended from British, Spanish and West African influences, this historic “jewel of the Caribbean” has it all.

Start your escape by soaking up the sun on the lively Junkanoo Beach. “There were plenty of eating and drinking options, as well as ease of renting lounge chairs,” says nursebc on TripAdvisor.com. “The water was warm and we had an excellent view of the cruise ships. I would recommend this beach for a relaxing and free day.”

To catch a glimpse of the marvelous marine life awaiting you in the Bahamian waters, head 15 minutes west to snorkel at Cable Beach. “Just swim out to the rocks jetting out of the water,” says a reviewer from Iowa.

“The water is nice and clear, and I saw lots of different fish—and even an awesome sea turtle!”

After toweling off, make the drive back east to explore the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas ($10 per adult, free for children under 12). “Located on a narrow, quaint street, this small gallery is definitely worth a visit!” says buddingtraveller17 on TripAdvisor.com. “It contains artwork by local artists depicting life for the locals in the past and present. It gives us an insight into a different side to this country often not seen by tourists. The entrance fee is also inexpensive!”

Finish your day with a stroll down Bay Street in downtown Nassau. There, you can shop for handmade goods at the famous Straw Market, dine on fresh seafood and delicious Caribbean fare and head to the nearby shore to catch a glimpse of the stunning sunset.

Pirates Don’t miss: of Nassau Museum

Enjoy a fun afternoon at the unique Pirates of Nassau Museum ($13 per adult, $6.50 per child), located just a block off Bay street. On the interactive tour, see re-created scenes from Caribbean pirate history, marvel at real-life artifacts dating back to the golden age of piracy and walk alongside the incredible Revenge, a replica of a real-life pirate ship.

Great day trip: Paradise Island

Take a quick ferry ride ($3 per person) to the 685-acre islet of Paradise Island. Once there, relax on the pristine Cabbage Beach, enjoy thrills at the Aquaventure Water Park and wander through the gorgeous Versailles Gardens and French Cloister.
