Straw­ber­ries soothe ir­ri­ta­ble bowel dis­ease

That’s the con­clu­sion of an an­i­mal study con­ducted at the Univer­sity of Mas­sachusetts in Amherst. In the study, mice fed the hu­man equiv­a­lent of 3⁄4 cup of straw­ber­ries daily ex­pe­ri­enced re­duced fre­quency of loose stools and lower lev­els of in­testi­nal in­flam­ma­tion. The study au­thors say plant com­pounds in straw­ber­ries (an­tho­cyanins) neu­tral­ize in­flam­ma­tory com­pounds in the colon, plus in­crease lev­els of good bac­te­ria in the gut to ward off symp­toms.
