Sub­jects in a Har­vard Univer­sity study who sim­ply closed their eyes and slowly counted to 10 be­fore eat­ing con­sumed 18% fewer calo­ries than those who didn’t. The study au­thors say “eat­ing rit­u­als” like count­ing stim­u­late the brain re­gion re­spon­si­ble for self-dis­ci­pline, mak­ing it eas­ier to avoid temp­ta­tion.
